First words books!
There are many “first words” books, like this book by Priddy Books, and we love it for so many reasons! The bright, simple pictures make for fun shared learning with your baby or toddler! These are also words that your baby will learn quickly and easily because they are used often and meaningful to their every day. Even newborns can benefit from shared book reading as they are listening to the words and how you are saying them! Toddlers will connect with first words books because of the familiar vocabulary. Watch their excitement as they see their favorite toys, foods and activities throughout the pages!
How to encourage language using “first words” books:
Point at the pictures and say the name!
Help your little one point at and touch the images! Babies love when we say the names of things they point at, and it helps them understand that their gestures have meaning!
Say the noises or sounds that go with different pictures '"Apple! Crunch, crunch, crunch… yummmm!"
Describe the actions that go with different pictures! "Car goes fast! Dog says woof!"
Talk about the features of different objects! "Dog! Nose, ears, so soft!"
If your little one knows many of the pictures and can say some, use this book to let them read to you! This is also an excellent opportunity for older siblings to "read" to the younger siblings!
Practice using words like "Hi" and "Bye" while looking at different pictures! "Hi, dog! Bye, dog!" "Hi, cat! Bye, cat!"
